In light of the harsh conditions experienced by the city of Jerusalem under the crimes of the Israeli occupation, the "Merciful Among Themselves" campaign was launched from the Jerusalem Governorate to promote civil peace and protect the Jerusalemite community from increasing challenges, as the campaign aims to spread the values of mercy, forgiveness and pardon, and to consolidate community unity in the face of internal and external pressures that threaten the fabric of the Jerusalemite community.
In recent years, internal problems in Jerusalem have worsened as a result of the Israeli occupation and its policies aimed at destabilizing the Jerusalemite community. Since 2019, quarrels and disputes have claimed the lives of 59 Jerusalemites, and more than 60 homes and commercial establishments have been burned and destroyed, in addition to injuries that have turned some victims into people with permanent disabilities. In addition to the occupation policies that include demolitions, forced deportations and daily arrests, which aim to empty the city of its original residents, especially young people, by creating a stifling environment that pushes them to forced migration.
Amidst this tragic reality, the "Merciful Among Themselves" campaign came as a response to these challenges, seeking to promote the values of tolerance and reject the seditions that the occupation exploits to dismantle society. The campaign was based on broad partnerships with governmental and community institutions, as the Ministry of Endowments participated with sermons and lessons calling for tolerance, and the Ministry of Education contributed to raising awareness among students through school radio and activity classes. It also organizes events in universities and schools to educate young people about the dangers of violence and the importance of civil peace. The campaign's efforts did not stop at awareness, but extended to holding meetings with municipalities and institutions to confront societal challenges such as the spread of drugs and the phenomenon of weapons. This campaign witnessed broad societal interaction, as reformers, youth, and influencers participated via social media with messages calling for tolerance and warning against the effects of violence, and this interaction was positively reflected in enhancing collective awareness of the importance of civil peace as a societal necessity. One of the most prominent human stories that demonstrated the importance and impact of the campaign was the position of the Asmar family, who lost two of their sons in a traffic accident caused by a member of another family. Despite the pain of loss, the family presented an honorable model of forgiveness by announcing forgiveness for the other party. This noble humanitarian stance embodied authentic Palestinian values and proved that tolerance can be the force that unites the Jerusalemite community in the face of challenges.
Civil peace in Jerusalem is not just an option, but a national and societal necessity to confront the occupation. The stability and unity of society form the basis for resisting the occupation's policies seeking to dismantle it. Hence, the Jerusalem Governorate, led by Governor Adnan Ghaith, who has been besieged by house arrest decisions for years, is working to protect this stability despite all the pressures, stressing that unity is the only way to confront the occupation and its plans.
The "Merciful Among Themselves" campaign sends a strong message: Jerusalem will remain steadfast with its people and their cohesion, and tolerance and forgiveness are the way to preserve the Jerusalemite community and its identity, and to emphasize that the righteousness of the Jerusalemite community is the cornerstone for protecting the city and its future.
